Review: The Secret Valentine Tour-February 21st, 2009

One thing I know about living in Albuquerque is there is two primary venues for small bands. One being the Sunshine Theater, which is where the Secret Valentine Tour’s 10th stop would be. Now, I’ve attended many shows at the Sunshine, but none quite like this. The tour featuring bands of the pop punk and power pop persuasion, it was quite a line up. Featuring headliner, We The Kings, and opening acts being the Maine, the Cab, There For Tomorrow, and VersaEmerge, this was a tour that I figured was going to be like every other tour out there, but wouldn’t you know that I was indeed surprised.

The first band set to open for the night was recent Fueled By Ramen signie, VersaEmerge, a quintet that hails from Port St. Lucie, Florida. From previous research I had done on this band before the actual performance, they were continually compared to label mates, Paramore, do to the fact that they fronted by a female. I took it upon myself to listen to their self-titled EP that they recently released and I was surprised how anyone could compare this band to Paramore. The band boasts a darker sound that can be reminiscent of bands such as Chiodos. Unfortunately for me, I wasn’t able to see the full band perform at the stop here. According to singer, Sierra Kusterbeck, the bands trailer got two flats on their journey here and made it just a mere 10 minutes before show time. So she, along with guitarist, Blake Harnage, hit the stage with just an acoustic guitar and their voices. For those who know me best are aware that I love bands that do great acoustically and that’s exactly what VE did. Sierra, although small, has a voice that is more powerful than many female vocalists out there. It set the mood for the crowd and it was very mellow and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Next up was Orlando natives, There For Tomorrow. I did zero research on the band beforehand, but I have to say, they convinced me to purchase their 2008 self titled EP. The band itself recently beat out headliner, We The Kings, for the MTVU Woodie for break out artist of the year. The bands live performance was more than enough to get me jumping along to the pop filled chorus’. All in all, There for Tomorrow is one band I would definitely love to see again.

Las Vegas’ own, The Cab, was one act that I was anticipating the most. Having influences such as Justin Timberlake to Blink 182 the band had so many elements to bring to the table musically. Vocalist, Alex Deleon, had a voice reminiscent of 90’s boy bands, but had a soulful twinge that flowed beautifully. He serenaded the ladies that stood in front and always put on a smile. The guitar solos brought on by Ian Crawford was also a crowd pleaser and just the all around sound was enough to make you want more. That being said, the band also did a cover of Gone by boy band NSYNC and literally, killed it. It sounded amazing and was probably the best cover I’ve heard in a while. The Cab is one band that can bring to each song a completely different sound from the one before it.

The Maine, in so many words, is catchy. That’s one word that can come to mind, for me, to describe them. With sound similar to bands like Boys Like Girls and Cute Is What We Aim For, they are a lot like most bands coming out in this day and age. I’m not bashing the boys, because honestly, they also put on a great show, but their music sounds like similar to so many acts, and it’s hard to remember to them for anything more than who they sound like.

Last, but certainly not least was headliner, We The Kings. Yet another set of Florida natives that blew my mind. The energy they had was amazing. The crowd was going wild with crowd surfer after crowd surfer going past the barricade. They of course, played songs for their latest self titled release, but also brought some pretty memorable, and quite entertaining, covers. First cover of the night? Guitarist, Hunter Thomsen along with a roadie, gave us a little taste of their hip hop side with a Lil Wayne cover that brought the crowd up and got them dancing around like mad. Next cover being that of The Killers hit, Mr. Brightside, and it was beautifully done, if I do say so myself. Oh, but the covers don’t end there! Drummer, Danny Duncan wanted the whole crowd to join in on a song, and what better way to do it then do a small cover of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme? The last bit of cover songs for the night was the beginning of Jason Mraz’s hit, I’m Yours, which singer and guitarist, Travis Clark, brought out an acoustic guitar. As soon as he finished that cover, he went into the bands own, This Is Our Town. The house lights went down and the whole place became illuminated by cell phone screens and cameras. It was an amazing thing to see. The night ended with the bands break out release, Skyway Avenue and it was over. Or so I thought.

I had spoken with Blake of VersaEmerge and he had mentioned that they were going to do a short acoustic set outside after the show. That they did, and again, I was blown away. What made this particular acoustic number memorable was the addition of a homeless man who was walking the street who joined in with Sierra as she sang along with fans. With that being said, one thing I can happily say about this tour is it is one that will go down in my book as one of the best tours of early 2009. I highly recommend anyone out there to check out the Secret Valentine Tour at a stop near you, because you will, in no way, be disappointed.

The Tale Of Miss Misery

Ladies and Gents, I’d like to tell you a story of a girl with a dirty
agenda. Make what you want of it, I’ll never tell, the story could be
true or just a fairy tale…

Miss Misery: A girl with self esteem
that is at the low of all lows. She keeps her self up by putting others
down in as many ways possible. She loves to brag when she meets
musicians as well…But there is one that she wants most of all. His name
is Johnny Love, and he sings for Four Year Break, and the band is loved
globally.

Miss Misery even spent her time writing a novel of
sorts of the fan fiction variety that she is hoping to publish with the
bands permission. Aside from that, she wants Johnny Love…

From
this picture I paint, dear readers, can you guess her age? No, she is
not a teenager, she is a full fledged adult who is currently in
college…and she wants to make him hers any way she can, even if it
means stabbing a few people in the back…

Miss Misery has a
friend, a best friend actually, who is true and wants to be a
successful music journalist some day. Her name is Anuhra and she is
probably the closest definition of a best friend you can get. Anuhra
loved music, and fell in love with a semi-small band called Another
Love. Anuhra spoke highly of them, and told Miss Misery about them.
Miss Misery didn’t really like their music all that much, but she saw
that she could use them for her master plan to persue Johnny. On their
MyPage she found that they were friends with a band that had recently
had tracks produced by Johnny Love.

The window for opportunity
was at her beck and call the day Another Love contacted her about
staying at her home. She graciously accepted and was thrilled how her
plan was getting closer to coming true.

One night, when she was
speaking with her dear friend Anuhra, she asked her if there would be a
possibility that Another Love would take her on tour with them.

Anuhra
was honest, and said no only being that the band didn’t know Miss
Misery well enough. She was willing to make that change…

Her
plan is to claw her way into the hearts of Another Love and earn their
trust. Then when she meets the band with the record Johnny Love
produced on. When that day comes, she wants to make it into their inner
workings of friendship and hopefully tour with them or possibly just
hang with them in hopes that she will meet Johnny. Miss Misery is
predictable, you can say, but I don’t believe her plan will work…

Did
you enjoy my little tale, readers? I hope you did. Now, I wonder, Miss
Misery, will you ever change? Will you ever stop being the little roach
crawling around the music industry trying to be BFF’s with bands for
your own gain? That I do doubt…

XO,
Sara7x

So, it's been a while and I'm just going to give a slight update on what I have been up to...

-I recently dropped out of high school and before you attack me with pitchforks for giving up like that, I just wanted to see that for me, this choice needed to be made. I was going no where when it came to my education. I would be in high school for two more YEARS if I didn't get out. But, don't fray, for I am going to pursue my education still. I'm studying for the GED, and no, it's not shit compared to a diploma. After I pass the test I will be able to attend college and I will hopefully persue nursing.

-I'm back into drawing. I've kinda been diving into it since I have all sorts of free time for you know, stuff. On my off time of hitting the books I have been doing a lot of artwork and to check it out, go to kviciousbenji.deviantart.com

-I'm 16! Hah, it's so not that big of a deal for posting but hey, I'm 16, therefore I can get my license :P

-I'm going to be attending a mindless self indulgence concert on the 19th and YES I will post a review so keep an eye out!!!

Tis All For Now!,

I got to go to the show for free. Thanks to Meagan and her crazy tendency to have a spare ticket. Anywho on with the bands!!! So first up was Cute Is What We Aim For. I was super stoked to see these guys since they haven't been to Albuquerque at all. Let me tell you, they pretty much pwned my face. They blew me away. What sucked was when we were taking pictures we couldn't use the flash, said security. I guess Shaant saw that or something because everytime he came to our side of crowd, he'd SPIT on that security guard. It was so awesome! Shaant is officially amazing, JUST because of that.
Next up, Plain White T's...hated them. Never want to see them again.

GYM CLASS HEROES, holy crap were they amazing. Travis is seriously god, honestly. He's so nice and he makes the cutest faces on stage. But just before they went on his cousin, Tiger, rapped a bit. It was pretty much amazing. This is probably the only rap I will listen to, srsly. Oh man, and when Travis tossed shit like his hat and stuff into the crowd, people went ape shit just to grab it. Insane much?
Next was the great FOB. Now, I'm not a huge fan of them but I did want to actually see them live. I was speechless. They did so good. Pyro up the ass too. My face felt the heat from flames that were like so far away.
All in all I give the concert a 9 out of 10.

CONCERT STATS:
Times Fallen: 0
People punched: 1

Feet pain scale of 1-10: 3

XO,
Sara

Yeah, I'm not a major fan of Hawthorne Heights but come on? Honestly, how is death a joke? What if it was your mother, brother, sister, father, anyone that passed away? How would you feel if people made it as a joke? What makes you so awesome to mock the death of someone? Just because you don't like their music and hate "Emo" or whatever the hell doesn't mean you have to be an ass about. This shows how sick and twisted people are. Just got back to a really great fucking show. Well, actually, they could have better bands open for them, but what can ya do? So I'm going to start with the beginning of the show. The first band to go up was Black Tide. Never heard of 'em but some people in line were pretty damn fond of them I suppose. So as they began it was just blah. It was just your normal band wanting to be the next Metallica (which wasn't even possible in their case). And hell they even covered a Metallica song no less. I don't recommend their live set if you do plan on seeing them off of this tour with A7X, it'll be a waste of your time.

Black Tide

Next up was The Confession. Apparently said to be the mini version of A7X. Fucking amazing. Those guys were awesome (and nice). I was really pumped when they were playing. Although there was some minor problems with some tards in the crowd. Yes, I am aware, that there is pushing at concerts and it's a lot worse at metal shows, but these guys were fucking pathetic. I was standing with this dude and his friend (who were totally rad by the way) and we were complaining about a group of stupid ass 20 something stoner asswhipes who were so damn determined to get into the front for A7X. And need I remind you, Black Tide and just left the stage and The Confession was just barely setting up, not to mention there was one more band before A7X was going to even start. So, I of course was pissed and whenever they tried ramming into me I'd put my elbow up so they could run into it. Finally they stopped for a bit. Then during the Confession, they had this little faggot with tight pants and gay ass hair tried crowd surfing. Bad fucking idea. He and his friends pissed so many people off that they dropped him and some girls even KICKED him. Yeah, it was fucked up, but that fucker deserved it.

The Confession

Now, Operator is a band that was produced by Matt Shadows himself, and of course, I heard many good things about this band. They started out alright since they did cover Walk , but afterwards they sound just awful. I mean, yeah, they have a good sound, but their songs suck balls. They should've just done covers the whole night...

Operator

Last. but not least, was Avenged Sevenfold. Now I'm not really a fan of their new shit but it was good to hear them live again. They came out and Johnny got BUFF. That and I saw good ol' Zacky V. He was wearing his cute little glasses and shit.

See, he looks awesome with glasses! :)

Anywho, so the show was going great and more shoving and what not and I finally decided I had enough so I went back to hang out with my friend Felisha. So the show went on and they ended the night with Unholy Confessions (Best song ever...). But before that they did perform Seize The Day, and at the beginning Zacky played acoustic and sang the opening verse. It was so awesome and chill. I am happy to say I had a great time.

STATS:
Times Fallen In Crowd: 2
People Punched: 3
Number Of Times I Almost Passed Out: 1
Moshing: 0
Pain Of Feet Scale Of 1-10: 9

Well that was my story, hope you enjoyed listening to my concert story and hopefully I will get another one up in a month or so (I may be going to FOB and such)

XoXo,
Sara

The Rocket Summer: My First Expirence With Live Photography

Well guys, here it is, the journal of a lifetime. Well lets start off
with me getting there. I was in line with Mr. Martinez's Nikon waiting
for the doors to open and get to the will call ticket line. I got a
hold of the manager for the Rocket Summer, Brett, and was told that I
will have to meet him at the back of the venue at about 6 or
so...Anywho, so as I waited for my interviewer Jacob I talked to a few
people and everyone was really chill and stuff. Finally Jacob arrived a
long with my friend Aly who I haven't seen in sooooo long. Jacob and I
headed to the back of the venue around 6 and waited. I called Bret
again and told him that we were at the back waiting, turns out Bryce
had some things to do so he rescheduled to interview before Armor For
Sleep went up. It was no problem so we went back to Aly who had our
place in line.
Finally the doors opened and I went to the will
call dude and told him mine as well as Jacob's and even my teacher's
name. We weren't on ANY of the lists. So I asked them to check the
Rocket Summer's guest list and he said that it wasn't turned in yet. So
me and Jacob jumped over the chain and waited while other kids got in.
While I was there I called Bret once more about the situation and he
made his way over with the guest list and I thought I was finally going
to get in. Well, security must have something up their asses that day
because they wouldn't let me into the venue with the camera. I
explained to them I was there to take photos of the band and interview
the Rocket Summer. They gave me so much crap and I was getting so upset
I thought was going to cry. I wanted to do this more than anything! So
then security was telling me that the tour manager for the actual tour
said he wouldn't allow any sort of camera equipment. I was about to
give up and another security guard walked up with my photo pass.

Now that we were inside I was super pumped but before we headed toward
the stage one guy stopped me and said that I could ONLY take photos of
the Rocket Summer and that if he saw me snapping photos while another
band was playing he would throw me out. So of course I obliged and
continued on with Jacob. First band up was Sherwood. They were AMAZING.
I had actually never really listened to any of their music previously
and I fell in love with them.
Once their set was over me and
Jacob went and got some water in the lobby where we were for a few
minutes. Oddly enough I guess Sherwood was finished getting their stuff
off the stage and the keyboardist was in the lobby. I told him they did
amazing at the show and he was really chill. Soon enough the Rocket
Summer began. I must say that they sound better than on the CD itself.
Bryce was pretty much amazing on stage as well as the other guitarist
(who is a babe...)LOL...But the thing that sucked the most was that I
couldn't even go in the middle in front of the barricade they told me I
could only take photos from the side. (And did I mention security kept
following me thinking I was going to start trouble?)
    Before I
knew it their set was done and Armor For Sleep was about to go up so
while they were setting up I text Brent and asked him when we should
meet Bryce and he said as soon as AFS starts to just go to the back of
the venue. A few minutes passed and it was time for us to go to the
back. We talked to one of the guitarists in TRS and he was hella nice
and then Bryce came out. He was totally chill and was super sweet. We
asked our question and the one that was my favorite was "What was the
craziest thing a fan has ever said to you?" and he responded
saying,"Well two of my fans have named their kids after me." It was
pretty weird but yet funny when I heard it.
    To rap this up I
want to say thanks to Teresa for setting this up, Brent for being
awesome, and Bryce for the awesome interview. They said that they'd be
coming in the spring so I'm definitely looking forward to it.

-Sara

P.S. I WILL GET THE PHOTOS BY NEXT WEEK BECAUSE I HAD TO RETURN THE CAMERA AND I HAD TO LEAVE REALLY EARLY.

Welp, yet another day of school and another day of reading comments on one of my Lyn-Z posts. Can ya say "I have no life and I love to talk shit to make myself feel better"?

Yeeeah, okay, this goes out to girls like Dahlia.
Okay, I understand your anger since I see it EVERYWHERE, but do you honestly have to open your mouth? Really what is it about shit talking makes you better? It makes you look ignorant and not only that but you make yourself look like an asshole, which then causes people bitching you out about it. I don't get why you guys have no faith in Gerard what so ever. You think he's drinking again but he's NOT. You guys also make of these crude and not to mention stupid rumors that Lyn-Z is an alcoholic and a druggie and wishing death upon her. My question is how and the hell can you judge someone by pictures and stories on the internet. You can't tell me you believe just about everything you read, do you?
If you don't recall, a lot of From First To Last fans had a bit of a scare when it was said that Sonny Moore died in a car accident (or something of that sort). A lot of people believed it and I think even some of Sonny's friends believed it and frantically called him wondering if the rumors were true. Do you understand what rumors do? Rumors on the internet are vicious. I learned some time go that you should never believe everything you read. People like that, should get their facts straight and actually try and have faith in Gerard, not hate on his wife.

Tone Down On The Haterade!,
Sara

Dear Gay Ass My Chem Fan Girls With No Life,
Did it ever occur to you that Geerad(yes I call him that) is happy? You noticed his odd behavior (IE him touching himself and you dying of orgasms...) and yes, that means kids, he's actually HAPPY. I know you little "I'm so emo, no can be happy! ARGH! Geerad is a man whore! I want his boddeh" bullshit. Yeah this is what I think...

YOU NEED TO STFU ALREADY.

I swear to god none of you guys want him to be happy at ALL. You acted like it was the end of the world when he was engaged...then when he wasn't you all had a fiesta. And now that he has found someone that he absolutely cares about, you have to put your gay ass "I have no life and I want to ruin his" bullshit into it. All I have to say is that I'm ashamed to associate my liking for MCR with you fuck heads that pull this shit. It's like, my god, do you not want any of the guys to be married or something? Honestly, if I was saying this shit online, my best friend would hit me up side the head. I know better than to act like a COMPLETE bafoon when I post blogs and/or comments on photos. Yes, Gerard is a very attractive guy, but I know I won't have a chance! I mean, HULLO, most of you have an age gap with him 15+ years. I mean honestly, are you THAT pathetic to think something like that would happen with a rock star?
Another thing I don't understand is that you guys call Lyn-Z ugly and shit. She's gorgeous. I know she isn't super scene or something and her band is a little out too out of the ordinary for you kids, but get a fucking grip! You don't like her and you babble and babble about how much you hate her on insane amounts of photos on buzznet. All I can say is fuck you, get a fucking life, and shut the fuck up.

-Sara

Why is it that some My Chem fans have to start a whole thread about any of the guys personal lives? I guess recently a picture surfaced of Gerard kissing a girl.

Now what I want to know is...
A) Why can't you guys just leave their love lives alone?
B) STFU and say Eliza is a bad person and that this girl is probably better because we don't know her, now do we?

I can honestly say that people are pathetic. I understand you love the band but didn't it occur to you that being a fan doesn't involve taking their time and ripping a girl to shreads if she's with someone remotley famous.

I found this on the WMH Boards and I thought it is a great thing to go by.

Rules On Being A Fan

1.) DO NOT BE A GROUPIE/FAN GIRL

This is important. Is it okay to have a crush? Sure it is. Is it
okay to think someone is hot/gorgeous/sexy/insert favorite adjective
here? Of course. Is it proper and acceptable to scream "OMG you're so
hawt and I wanna have your babies11111!!!57Hf92omg111" into the face of
your favorite famous person or the ear of the poor, unsuspecting soul
standing next to you? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Be respectful. Famous people are just like you and me - they just
happen to have a higher profile job. They burp, fart, have bad breath,
bed head, get moody, laugh, cry, eat, sleep, etc. just like the rest of
us. They don't like when you act like they are God Himself (well, some
do, but that's another subject entirely), so don't. Be nice to them,
and you'll get your autograph/picture/hug.

2.) BE NICE IN THE PIT

If you have a floor ticket to your favorite show, be nice to those
around you. If you are tall and there's someone way shorter behind you,
don't be a jerk and let them go in front of you. That way they can
actually see the show instead of your shoulder blades all night.

If someone falls down next to you, pick them up. If someone is
having a hard time staying conscious, help them out of the pit. And
don't complain that you've now become an armrest or that your feet are
getting stepped on. Welcome to the pit. If you can't handle it, don't
be a whiner, just get out of it and let those who can handle it be
there.

3.) SAFETY FIRST, LAST, AND ALWAYS

If you are making a mad dash to the barrier as security opens the
doors, don't take out half the crowd down the stairs. You can get
injured and injure others in the process. No position on the floor is
worth spending your time in the first aid room, or worse, the hospital.

4.) WATCH YOUR MOUTH

Sing, scream, whoop and hollar, make some noise. But don't, under
any circumstances, yell out creepy things such as "I'm gonna rape you!"
or "Fuck me, Gerard!" (or Frank or Ray or Mikey or Bob or Brendon or
Adam or...you get the idea). It's creepy. It's squirmy. And it's just
plain wrong. Would you want someone to scream that at you? Honestly.
Then don't do it to them. It's not flattering. And if you are that hell
bent on having meaningless 5 minute sex with a band member in the back
of a tour bus, then go see Kid Rock. He's into that sort of thing.
Leave the decent boys alone.

5.) RESPECT OTHER FANS

We're all there for the same reason - to see our favorite band, and
if lucky enough, meet them after the show. Fan elitism has no place
here. You are no better than the fan who just discovered the band 5
minutes ago than you are the fan who's been listening for years.

6.) RESPECT GIRLFRIENDS, WIVES, FRIENDS, ETC.

This should be self-explanitory. Bands have loved ones that come and see the show. Be nice to them.

7.) DO NOT BE A SELFISH HOG

There are usually a lot of people waiting after a show, and if the
band is nice enough to come out and say hi, understand that they need
to say hi to everyone, not have a 30 minute long conversation with you.
If there is time for that, then great. But usually there isn't, so get
your autograph, hug, and picture, and let them move on to other fans.

I know this was long, but thanks for reading. Follow these simple
rules and everyone should have an awesome concert going experience.

These rules aren't hard to follow. This is what is like to be a TRUE fan. Not some girl who decides to talk shit about a bands friends/family/wives/girlfriends. It's not cool at all.

-Sara
